New Orleans police: Officer shot in Lower 9th Ward

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say a Jefferson Parish sheriff deputy working as part of a federal task force has been shot multiple times and is being treated at a hospital.

Police spokeswoman Gerry Flot says the officer was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration in the Lower 9th Ward section of the city when he was shot.

Col. John Fortunato with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says the deputy was shot multiple times.

The neighborhood saw some of the most devastation in the city from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Police did not give further details about the shooting, the officer’s injuries or about any suspect. The officer’s name wasn’t released.
