White supremacists? Not exactly, KKK and other groups claim

PELHAM, N.C. (AP) — White supremacy is a label that’s too hot to handle even for groups like the Ku Klux Klan.

Klan members at a recent rally in North Carolina disavowed the term, even though a century-old KKK rulebook identifies white supremacy as the group’s goal. Other white extremist organizations also typically deny being white supremacist.

Experts say such denials are likely linked to efforts to make white racist groups seem more respectable. Today, groups like the Klan and neo-Nazis often refer to themselves as white nationalists.

Such ideology is getting more attention since Donald Trump was elected president with the public backing of the Klan other white extremists.

The founder of a website popular with such groups, Don Black, says white supremacy is a term often misused by the media.
