Chile: Catholic church looted by hooded vandals

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Authorities say a group of hooded vandals has looted a Roman Catholic church in the Chilean capital.

The Gratitud Nacional church was desecrated during a student protest in Santiago on Thursday. Vandals broke into the church and destroyed a large image of a crucified Christ before they took off with other religious iconography.

Chilean religious authorities said they will file a complaint with the Santiago city government that granted student groups authorization to march. Students are demanding a bigger role in an education reform that has been promised by President Michelle Bachelet.

Student marches in Chile are usually peaceful but often end with clashes between police in riot gear and groups of vandals who loot shops and hurl rocks and Molotov cocktails.
