KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A longtime lawyer from suburban St. Louis who took part in a clever escape from a Nazi prison camp has received a prisoner-of-war medal, but it likely wouldn’t have happened if not for the efforts of his children.
The award expedited by Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill was given to 93-year-old Edwin Shifrin in February during a small ceremony at the Clayton apartment he shares with his wife of 67 years.
Shifrin’s son, Dan Shifrin, says his father rarely discussed his time at war, but the family knew he had escaped from a prison camp and safely made it home. Dan Shifrin says he was able to learn about the escape by digging through old news reports and his father’s military records.
