Urbana will take on Cincinnati Aiken in a Division II district final boys basketball game at the University of Dayton Arena on Sunday at 4 p.m. in what should be a clash of styles.

The Hillclimbers like to impose their will defensively and let the offense come naturally, while Aiken pushes the tempo – scoring 115 points in its sectional final.

“They’re very talented and very good,” UHS Coach Jeremy Dixon said. “We’re hoping that our style and our discipline will make for a good game. Aiken’s a good team, but we’re playing pretty well right now.”

The Hillclimbers (18-7) are rolling in the tournament, for sure, after defeating league rivals Graham and Indian Lake, then dispatching cross-division foe Tippecanoe in the sectional final.

“Sometimes it’s almost a relief to get away from some of those league teams,” Dixon said, explaining that everyone knows Urbana’s tendancies so well after playing two or three times during the season.

The meeting with Aiken will be Urbana’s first district game since 2011. The Hillclimbers haven’t won a district title since the 1982 season.

“Our guys are excited about the opportunity,” Dixon said. “We really tried to beef up our schedule for games like this.”

The Hillclimbers will have to be in top shape, as Aiken sports the Southwest District Player of the Year.

Carlik Jones scored 22.3 points per game for the Falcons, including a school-record 57 in the sectional final.

That has Dixon a little worried, but he thinks his team is up to the challenge – as a unit.

“Guys are more secure in what their roles are for our team,” Dixon said, noting that has been a big key to the Hillclimbers’ success in the postseason.
