Urbana boys trounce Graham

SPRINGFIELD – Urbana defeated Graham, 52-32, in the Division II boys basketball sectional on Saturday.

Urbana leapt out to a 10-0 lead before the Falcons scored and led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter.

“Our guys worked hard and believed in the game plan, but you can’t get down like that,” Graham Coach Mike Smart said. “You’ve got to make a decision about how to play. Tonight, with their size and athleticism, we decided to play zone.”

That zone was mildly effective early on, but the Falcons trailed 22-12 at halftime.

“We didn’t really have a sense of urgency on offense,” UHS Coach Jeremy Dixon said. “But I thought we got the ball inside a lot better in the second half. In the first half we settled a bit for jumpers and in the second half, we took advantage of our size.”

Urbana indeed had its way, pounding the Falcons on the glass and and getting multiple stick-backs.

“You know that eventually, they’re going to figure something out – especially if they use their size,” Smart said.

Urbana big man Levi Boettcher had 16 points to lead the victors. Jordan Underwood scored 14 points and Cameron Logwood added 12. Andrew Ford had 17 points for Graham.

“It was a good effort,” Dixon said. “It wasn’t our best effort, but we were just trying to win tonight, which we did. I’m not unhappy. We played well, but we know we can play a little bit better.”

Urbana advances to play Indian Lake on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Springfield High School.
