West Virginia State sweeps UU teams

INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Urbana University women’s basketball team fell on the road Thursday night to West Virginia State by a final score of 107-66 inside the Walker Convocation Center.

UU lost in the later men’s game, 86-71. Carlas Jackson paced UU with 20 points and Mike Newton scored 17.

Forced to deal with a late arrival and a delayed start to the contest, the UU women showed no sign of life in the first half. The Blue Knights were blitzed by the Yellow Jackets, who hit 7 of 9 threes and limited UU to 23-percent shooting to go up by 44 points at halftime.

UU came out of the break and finally hit some shots to outgun the home team 27-21 in the third quarter. But by then, the WVSU lead was insurmountable as the Yellow Jackets cruised to the win.

Senior guard Kennedy Boggs led the Blue Knights with 19 points and five assists. Sophomore forward Jazmyn Haley came up one rebound shy of posting her third straight double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine boards. Freshman Danie Shafer also reached double figures with 11 points, but failed to hit a 3-pointer for just the fourth time all season.

As a team, UU struggled by shooting 34 percent overall and going 4 of 20 from beyond the arc. WVSU shot a blistering 65 percent in the first half and finished at 57 percent for the game. The Yellow Jackets made eight more treys than UU on the same number of attempts.

Senior forward Alexus Hobbs led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while senior guard Deyahnna Styles registered a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.

UU will look to snap its six-game slide with another MEC road game Saturday against Charleston. UU topped UC, 97-81, in Urbana back on Dec. 3, 2015. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
