Edwards’ penalty kick goal lifts UU to first win

FAIRMONT, W. Va. — The Urbana women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Fairmont State Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

With the victory, UU moves to 1-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 against Mountain East Conference foes. Fairmont State was dealt its first loss of the season and now stands at 2-1-1 (1-1-1 MEC).

Freshman Savannah Morgan put the Blue Knights ahead 1-0 early on her first career goal. The forward from Wilmington, Ohio deposited a corner kick from Alyssa Garberich into the back of the net in just the third minute of action. It was also Garberich’s first assist of the season.

Then, the Blue Knights played solid to end the first half with the lead and carried over the momentum into the second stanza. The game grew physical as the time continued to wind down in the second half. Both teams combined for 24 fouls in the league matchup.

Fairmont received a break in the 62nd minute and took advantage of a free kick from distance to even the score. Gabriella Mascaro connected on the 40-yard equalizer from the left half of the field which sailed into the left upper 90.

The game remained tied over the next 10 minutes of action. Then, UU took a corner in the 75th minute and the play resulted in a foul inside the box against the Fighting Falcons. That allowed freshman forward Alyssa Edwards to put the game-winner home on a penalty kick, which also marked her first collegiate goal.

UU keeper Katherine Beech prevented a late come-back attempt by the Falcons and registered three saves between the pipes.

The Blue Knights were outshot 10-7 and held the edge on corners 3-1. The Falcons were handed two yellow cards in the match.

UU returns home next Thursday to host Shepherd in a 2 p.m. matchup at UU Stadium.
