Cardinal has Cardinals ready

NORTH LEWISBURG – Joe Cardinal got a late start as Triad’s head football coach last year, and he’s hoping to turn things around in season number two.

“For us, last year was tough, as I was hired just a couple of days before two-a-days started,” said Cardinal. “Now, we’ve had an entire off-season to put a weight program into place and that really has helped us.”

Triad has seven returning starters on offense and six on defense.

Those returning starters include senior Andy Martin – RB/LB; juniors Easton Huffman – DL; Josiah Leasure – OL; Devin Swiatek – OL; Cam Boes – LB; Riley Louck – OL/DL; Dylan Rice – RB and Isaiah Bruce – WR/LB and sophomore Logan McCoy – WR/DB.

Other returning lettermen include sophomore Jordan Simonelli, junior Jack Walls and senior Cameron Atchison.

Also expected to see varsity playing time this season are juniors Michael Leistritz – OL and Derek Bruce – WR/LB and sophomores Ian Crabtree – CB, Jacob Jenkins – LB and Jacob Simonelli – FS.

“We’re excited for this season,” said Cardinal. “We had an entire off-season to put together an offense and defense. We’re excited for the season and we are looking to be in the playoff hunt come week 10.

Cardinal believes Mechanicsburg, West Liberty-Salem and West Jefferson will be the teams to beat in the two-division OHC this season.

Triad opens the season at Indian Lake Friday night in non-league action.
