COLUMBUS – Varsity Magazine hosted its inaugural Varsity Awards on Monday night, with more than 100 athletes vying for 32 awards from the 2016-2017 prep sports seasons.

Two Champaign County natives took home athlete of the year honors, with four-time state champion Kaleb Romero (Mechanicsburg) winning Wrestler of the Year and state champion Luc Russell (Urbana) winning Bowler of the Year.

Romero also won a team state title this past season while at Mechanicsburg, while Russell won a team title with Urbana two years ago.

The Varsity Awards were hosted by former Ohio State and NFL running back Eddie George, with a myriad of notable Buckeyes and Ohio athletes in attendance at the Davidson Theatre in downtown Columbus.
