WL-S splits doubleheader in Nashville

West Liberty-Salem went to Tennessee for the start of the 2017 spring baseball season, splitting a pair of games on Saturday.

The Tigers fell to Unionville, 9-3. Losing pitcher Zech Gluckle surrendered seven runs, five of them earned, while striking out one.

Dillon Callicoat provided the offense for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put the Tigers up 2-0. Starting pitcher Tyler Louden then surrendered a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. Gluckle came on and the Vikings never looked back.

Thomas Allen was 1-for-3 with a triple and Trevor Burden was 1-for-2 with a single for the Tigers.

In the second game, WL-S beat Franklin Christian Academy, 16-7.

Chase Humphrey qualified for his first win on the season. He surrendered five runs, but none of them were earned. He also had an RBI double and scored two runs in the victory.

Levi Moell was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tyler Louden, Brandon Orahood and Trevor Burden all had hits in the victory for the Tigers.

The Tigers are now 1-1 on the season and will stay on the road to face North Union in Richwood, Ohio, today.

M’burg baseball wins pair

Mechanicsburg defeated Mississinawa Valley, 9-8 and 11-5, in non-league baseball on Saturday.

In the first game, Corey Bogan had the walk-off hit for the Indians.

Caleb Newsome went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and 3 RBI, Keane Dunn was 2-for-4 and Matt Myers was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

In the second game, Newsome went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and Dylan Hartman was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Mechanicsburg (2-0) will host Triad on Tuesday.

Urbana baseball splits

Urbana hosted Milton-Union in a doubleheader on Saturday, losing 6-4 in the first game before winning, 8-5, in the second.

In the first game, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, adding another in the seventh for good measure.

Seth Mangus was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Caleb Peterson had a triple and an RBI. Peterson also pitched five innings, striking out 11 for UHS.

In the second game, Urbana pushed across three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to seal the win.

Brayden Fain was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and 2 RBI, Gabe Spiers was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Tyler Weekly was 2-for-3.

Urbana (1-1) plays at Xenia Christian on Tuesday.

Triad softball falls

River Valley came out on top of Triad, 7-3 and 4-2, in non-league softball on Saturday.

In the first game, Triad dug a 5-0 hole before responding with three runs in the bottom of the third. But the Cardinals committed three errors and were outhit 11-7 in the loss.

Madison Dolby went 3-for-4 and Abby Ehrenborg hit a three-run home run for Triad.

In the second game, River Valley put a three-spot on the board in the second, which proved to be the difference.

Dolby was 2-for-4 in that game and Ehrenborg went 3-for-4 with a double.

UHS tennis wins

The Urbana High School boys tennis team won its opening match, 4-1, over Piqua.

At first singles, Andrew Fansler lost, 0-6, 7-6, 6-1 to Sean Hatke.

At second singles, Bailey Ullah won 6-0, 6-1 versus Brad McPherson.

At third singles, Abe Angles won 6-0, 6-0 versus Willis Young.

At first doubles, Cole Headlee and Hudson Stouffer won 6-1, 6-2 versus Greg Reyes and Isaiah Smith.

At second doubles, Nick Pettit and Alex Swank won 6-0, 6-0 versus Eil Bloom and Kate Dolder.

In jayvee singles, Jacob Coffey won 8-0.
