Blue Knight teams split with Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W. Va. –The Urbana University men’s basketball team beat Glenville State, 96-85, in MEC action on Thursday.

The Blue Knights led, 42-32, at the half.

For UU (9-10, 4-9), DeQuan Abrom had 21 points, Dalton Payton had 17 and Carlas Jackson added 16.

The Blue Knights now have more wins than the past three years combined (8).

UU plays at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 4 p.m.

UU women fall

Down to seven active players, the Urbana University women’s basketball team fell 85-57 to Glenville State Thursday night inside the Waco Center.

UU dropped its fifth-straight contest while moving to 4-12 overall and 2-11 against Mountain East Conference teams. The Blue Knights haven’t scored 70 points in a game during the recent slide and remain winless against the Pioneers (0-8). Glenville State improved to 16-3 and 10-3 in conference games.

The Blue Knights tried to slow down the pace against the nation’s top-scoring offense, limiting the Pioneers to 14 points below their season average, but the home team used a 14-player lineup to outlast UU.

Freshman Sylvia Hudson registered her fifth double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead UU. One of the top percentage shooters in the MEC, Hudson continued her efficient play by going 7 of 10 from the floor. Sophomore Megan Beachy also reached double digits with 12 points, including 10 in the first half.

The Blue Knights finished 43 percent from the floor with 21 made field goals while the Pioneers shot at a 38-percent clip on 80 shot attempts.

Glenville State was led by Kristin DesRocher’s game-high 21 points on six made 3-pointers.The Pioneers drained 14 treys while the Knights made just one 3-pointer on nine attempts.

UU grabbed its only lead in the opening moments after Stefanie Davis completed a three-point play to make it 7-3. However, the Pioneers responded with a 16-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way.

A Beachy jumper to open the second quarter got the deficit down to nine, but again the Pioneers went on a run and built a 43-24 halftime lead. UU turned the ball over 14 times in the first half as opposed to only seven over the third and fourth quarters combined.

The Blue Knights will look to snap their losing streak on Saturday when they challenge the last team they beat, West Virginia Wesleyan. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
