Triad falls to Gophers

NORTH LEWISBURG – Ridgemont took advantage of a cold-shooting Triad team to take a 17-10 halftime lead, extend it to 24-10 early in the 3rd quarter and then hold off a furious Cardinal rally to win, 51-43, in non-league girls basketball.

“In one sense, this was a frustrating game, because we handled the ball well with only 11 turnovers and had very good looks at the basket all night long,” said Triad Coach Jeff Merklin. “We ended up taking 69 shots, and really I can’t recall a bad one. Unfortunately, other than when we really had a nice run in the late 3rd quarter/early 4th quarter, we just couldn’t knock it down. Overall, it was a fun game to coach and it was another positive brick in the road we’re trying to build to get the program going again.”

Tori Thomas led Triad (1-3) with 22 points and also hauled down 8 offensive rebounds (9 total). Audrey Lightle added 11 rebounds.

Ridgemont won the jayvee game, 33-19. Olivia Butz had 9 points for Triad.
