UU splits with visiting West Virginia State

Urbana University closed the final 2:38 on a 10-0 run to steal a 77-76 win over West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon at the Grimes Center.

Trailing 76-67, Stefanie Davis hit a jumper and Megan Beachy followed with a three to help spark the rally. Davis added two more free throws and then Jazmyn Haley converted a three-point play with 27 seconds left and came up with the defensive stop on WVSU’s final possession to secure the win.

Beachy finished with 25 points, including six three-pointers, to lead UU. Haley had 13 and Davis and Kennedy Boggs each netted 11.

Laura Szorenyi led WVSU with 20 points, six assists and four rebounds. Shealyn Shafer had 13 points and seven boards and Aurreshae Hines had 12 points and eight rebounds.

UU men fall

West Virginia State broke away from Urbana University late to claim a 99-92 win on Saturday afternoon at the Grimes Center in MEC men’s basketball.

Robert Fomby led the Yellow Jackets with 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Frank Webb scored 24 points, including a 14-of-15 performance from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets shot 53 percent from the field in the game.

Jahmere Howze poured in a career-high 38 points and added 11 rebounds for the Blue Knights (1-7). Matt Csuhran had 13 points and Mike Newton dished out 10 assists.
