NEW CARLISLE – Shawnee defeated Graham, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16, in Division II sectional volleyball on Wednesday.

In the first set, Graham opened up an early lead, but Shawnee battled back and led midway through the set. The score was tied at 19-19 and again at 23-23 before the Braves were able to put away the final two points.

In the second set, Shawnee jumped out to a 14-7 lead that was equal parts Braves’ effort and Falcons’ mistakes. Graham started to come back, but fell short near the end of the set.

“They were a super-scrappy team. They are either off or on and tonight they were on. They beat us fair and square,” GHS Coach Gaye Carafa said.

The third set was all Shawnee, as the Braves built a 6-0 lead before Carafa called a timeout. Graham battled back to 9-9, but more errors and terrific play from Shawnee helped the Braves run away and seal the match.

“I tried to use the timeouts the way I could,” Carafa said. “(I said) relax, focus on what your job is.’ They just killed us on the outside.”

Graham junior Carly Carafa and senior Kaitlin Trace led the Falcons, with 10 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Trace added 3 aces.

In all, Graham will graduate five seniors, including Trace, Macy McCool, Molly Hamilton and Keara Westfall. It was a sour ending for them.

“I’m sure that will be a devastating thing for them,” Carafa said. “We’ll see when we get in the locker room.”
