Ben Logan downs Urbana, 52-9

BELLEFONTAINE – Benjamin Logan had its way with Urbana on Friday night, pulling away from the visitors for a 52-9 victory in CBC football action.

The home team took the opening kickoff back to within the 10-yard line and scored on the first play from scrimmage, tacking on the two-point conversion to test Urbana’s will early.

“If you look at the play, there’s a couple of kids in a position to make a play, do the right thing, and they didn’t,” UHS Coach Jon Daniels said. “So you’re talking about a game of inches. And now they’re going to let inches dictate what they’re going to be tonight. That’s frustrating for us. I hope that’s frustrating for our leaders. I hope it’s frustrating for everyone involved.

“You work that hard and you let a couple of mistakes dictate who you’re going to be instead of putting yourself in a position to adjust and come back and play a football game.”

The Raiders jumped out to a 37-0 lead after a quarter and 52-3 at halftime.

Senior quarterback Trey Wilson connected with several of his receivers and, using a mixture of bubble screens, read options and quarterback draws, lit up the scoreboard.

“There’s nothing to say about that. We did nothing right tonight,” Daniels said. “From start to finish, we didn’t give ourselves a chance.”

Urbana was lacking in coverage of all kinds, from kick coverage to pass coverage. Ben Logan out-ran and out-blocked the Hillclimbers all night.

“Our guys work extremely hard Monday through Thursday. They don’t shy away from anything,” Daniels said. “For whatever reason – I don’t know what it is – if a team is going to jump on us, we cower away from it.”

With the running clock activated in the second half, it was just a death march to the finish for Urbana as the Raiders let off the gas a little bit.

The only bright spot for the Hillclimbers came when the Raiders fumbled a bad snap on a punt with less than two minutes left that put UHS in the red zone to start the drive. A few plays later, Preston Shields scored from six yards out on fourth-and-goal as time expired to put a touchdown on the board for Urbana.

The Hillclimbers (1-3) host Indian Lake next Friday night.
