Urbana University senior Michael McFarlane has been voted to the 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men’s Soccer First Team.

The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

McFarlane, a midfielder/defender from Haddington, Scotland, carries a 3.45 GPA in Business at Urbana University. He’s been a major catalyst for the Blue Knight men’s soccer team’s rise to national prominence this season. Currently, he stands tied for the team lead in goals with a career-high seven, after bursting onto the scene with four goals in the first five matches.

McFarlane registered his first multi-goal performance with two scores at Concord on Sept. 19, and was consequently named Mountain East Conference Player of the Week. In addition, two of his goals have been game winners.

Overall, McFarlane has 15 points on the year with one assist.

He’s the third student-athlete from the UU men’s soccer program to earn the CoSIDA Academic All-District Award. Alums Josh Baskin and Chris Hortsman earned the recognition in 2006.

No. 23 UU (11-3-2, 7-3-1 MEC) will close out the regular season on Sunday at Shepherd.
