Indians win district golf title

MIDDLETOWN – Mechanicsburg won the Division III district golf tournament with a 335, edging out Ohio Heritage Conference rival Southeastern by two strokes. Both teams will advance to the state tournament next weekend at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus.

Caleb Westfall shot a 77 and Mack Cushman fired an 80 to give the Indians a fighting chance.

“Mack and Caleb both did exactly what we knew they would do,” Coach Todd Trainer said.

But despite Mechanicsburg’s terrific 1-2 punch, they haven’t been unbeatable this season due to an average lineup the rest of the way.

“We knew we needed another guy to break 90,” Trainer said.

The Indians got it from Corey Bogan, who carded a career-best 85 and put the Indians at the top of the leaderboard.

“That’s a career day for a kid that’s been playing for 15 months,” Trainer said.

Cody Minor rounded out the scoring with a 93 for M’burg, while Jack Shoemaker shot a 98 to provide a solid safety net in the event of a collapse by another team member.

The victory moves Mechanicsburg to 42-10 on the season and gives it a chance at a state title.

“(Being a district champion) makes you at least in the top six in the state,” Trainer said. “If these guys go and shoot that number again, I don’t see why we can’t be in the mix. We have a week to improve on what we struggled with.”

In other action, West Liberty-Salem’s Dillon Callicoat shot an 87 in the Division II tournament Thursday and tied for 38th.

Also, Urbana’s Maggie Paulsen shot a 94 and tied for 25th at the girls’ Division II district tourney at Pipestone on Wednesday.
