Tigers move to state ACME tourney

LONDON — West Liberty-Salem’s ACME baseball team defeated London 14-8 on Tuesday in the district championship to advance to the state tournament in Celina on Saturday.

The Tigers will play Celina at 7:30 p.m. at Montgomery Field in the first round this weekend.

Underwood signs

Jordan Underwood, of Urbana, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Edison State Community College in the upcoming season.

The six-foot-two-inch combo guard was a standout player for the Urbana High School basketball team, leading the team in scoring with 14.6 points per game and shooting 42.1% from 3-point range this past season.

Underwood was named Central Buckeye Conference (CBC) Player Of The Year, 1st Team All–CBC, 3rd Team All-District, Team MVP and was selected to play in the District 9 All-Star Game.

The men’s basketball coaching staff is eagerly anticipating what Underwood will bring to the Chargers program this season.

Underwood will pursue an associate degree in business while attending Edison State Community College.

Hux signs

Mechanicsburg native Sydney Hux has announced that she will continue her academic and athletic career at Wilmington College. Hux will be entering the Pre-Vet Program majoring in Life Sciences.

Hux will join 23-year Head Coach Jerry Scheve and 2-year Assistant Coach Allan King on the basketball team in the fall of 2016.

While at Mechanicsburg High School, Hux was inducted into the National Honor Society, Student Council, Scholar Athlete and Honor Roll. Hux enjoyed success in basketball, track , soccer, band and choir for the Indians. She received All-OHC and Student Athlete awards in soccer and basketball.

She is the recipient of the Dr. Judy Sanders, Christy Knotts and Ranae Donohoe Memorial, Mechanicsburg Music Boosters and Wilmington Academic Scholarship awards totaling $8,750.

Golf outing

The inaugural Mark Smith “Smitty” Golf Outing will be held at Woodland Golf Course on July 23 at 2 p.m. The cost is $50 per player and proceeds will fund scholarships for Urbana, West Liberty-Salem and Triad students pursuing degrees in special education.
