Urbana University’s Kevin Chapple has been selected D2Football.com’s National Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the site on Wednesday. The weekly award is the second for Chapple following his impressive display in UU’s Week 2 victory at West Virginia State. He was named Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

A native of Columbus, Chapple recorded 12 tackles against the Yellow Jackets with five of those stops going down as tackles for loss. The five tackles for loss are tied for the second-most in a single game ever recorded by a Blue Knight in the school’s history.

Chapple also came up with a big fumble recovery in the first quarter versus WVSU, which he returned 24 yards to set up UU’s opening touchdown.

His presence caused issues for the WVSU offense all day, as he totaled two sacks, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.

Chapple, a 2015 USACollegeFootball.com Preseason All-American, is the first Blue Knight to earn a weekly award this season and first to be honored by D2Football.com.

He also became the second Blue Knight to earn the MEC’s defensive weekly honor since the MEC’s inception in 2013. Teammate D’Gary Wallace is a two-time honoree.

The Blue Knights (1-1) return to UU Stadium this Saturday for a noon matchup with No. 21 Concord (1-1).
