Athletes advance to regionals

ST. PARIS – Area athletes competed at the Division II district track and field finals at Graham on Saturday.

Gage Thomas won the high jump for Graham and advanced to the regional meet this week and Nick Johnson qualified for the regional competition for Urbana, finishing third in the 100-meter dash.

Indians advance

DAYTON – In Division III, Mechanicsburg’s boys team finished third in the Division III district track meet at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium.

Jared Butcher won the 400-meter dash, Bryce Waring won the 200 and David Harvey won the long jump to advance to the regional. Also qualifying were Bryce Waring (4th, 100; 3rd, long jump), Gavin Erwin (4th, 800), Trent Fuller (3rd, discus), Phil Cook (2nd, pole vault) and David Harvey (2nd, high jump). The 4×200 team qualified by placing third and the 4×400 qualified by placing fourth.

For the girls, Emily Wilson qualified by placing third in the long jump and Callie Kaiser was third in the pole vault.

Tigers advance

WEST MILTON — In the Division III meet at Milton-Union, West Liberty-Salem and Triad got some athletes through to the regional.

Joey Adams won the 1,600 for WL-S and finished second in the 3,200.

“Joey ran two smart and very competitive races on Saturday,” said WL-S Coach Joseph Taylor. “He and McBride from Newton have a nice battle going on right now between cross country and track, and it will be fun to watch them compete again this week at the regional meet. Joey works very hard on and off the track and he deserves everything he is earning right now. We are all excited to get back to work to prepare for another couple of races.”

Also advancing for WL-S was Brandon Wolfe (long jump).

For Triad, Josh McManaway advanced in the discus, placing fourth.

For the girls, West Liberty-Salem’s Morgan Freyhof placed third in the 100-meter dash and helped propel the 4×100 team to a fourth-place finish. Janie Kopus was fourth in the 400, Caylee Karg was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and the 4×400 team was third.

Smith places 2nd

Noah Smith, a WL-S 8th grader, competed at the Ohio Middle School state track meet and finished 2nd in the 3,200 with a time of 11:00.9.
