WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – Urbana University softball wrapped up conference play Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over West Liberty, 9-0 and 9-2. Five of UU’s six wins this season came against MEC opponents under first-year head coach Kira Zeiter.

Game 1

UU’s Cortney Moore dealt the first shutout win of the season for the Blue Knights with a brilliant performance in the circle. The senior right hander surrendered just four hits across seven innings and did not walk a batter. It was her third win of the season.

The Blue Knights led 2-0 after five innings and then put up seven runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Savannah Sturgill put UU on the board with an RBI double in the second frame and Learic Kinser knocked home the second run in the fourth. Kinser got the scoring started in the sixth with her second RBI single of the contest. Katelyn Edwards followed with a bases-loaded walk, and then Blue Knights caught fire by following with five consecutive RBI singles from Moore, Margo Jackson, Jenna VanHoose, Sturgill, and Kennedy.

The Blue Knights outhit the Hilltoppers 12-4 as five players recorded two hits. Both teams did not commit an error.

West Liberty’s Callaway Barr took the loss in the circle.

Game 2

The Blue Knights scored nine runs again the second game and racked up 11 more hits. UU scored in every inning but the fourth and fifth.

UU went up 2-0 in the first inning after Courtney Stewart crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Moore’s sac fly. Kinser and Sturgill each provided an RBI single in the second and third innings, respectively, putting UU ahead 4-0.

The Hilltoppers cut the deficit to two after scoring one run in each of the fourth and fifth, but UU responded with three more in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Stewart finished with a team-high three hits with an RBI and also picked up the win inside the circle. She started the game and pitched three-and-a-third with one strikeout.

Kinser (RBI) and Sturgill (two RBI) each went 2-for-4 at the dish, while Jackson produced UU’s only extra-base hit with her seventh double of the season.

UU will close out the regular season with a Tuesday doubleheader against Cedarville. The non-conference matchup gets underway at UU Softball Field with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
