Congressman’s data questioned by reader

When I read a certain quote by U.S. Representative Jim Jordan in the “Rep. Jordan discusses farm bill” article (published Friday, June 3), I thought maybe he misspoke. The quote seemed rather exaggerated. U.S. Representative Jim Jordan is quoted as saying, “Many of you probably know that when President (Barack) Obama took office, 17 million Americans were on food stamps; now there are 47 million.”

After a little bit of research at the SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program) website (Table F.1), a report there indicates that there were about 32,146,000 participating in 2009.

Maybe he simply just misspoke.
