If I would have known then what I know now, I might not have encouraged the Urbana City Schools to save the old castle building. From the illustrative layout plan drawn by Fanning/Howey, the placement of buildings looks odd. Plus, they still don’t have a use for the castle building.
My mother, my son and I all graduated from UHS, that castle on the hill. So, I have many fond memories of what took place in those buildings and a desire to keep a tradition alive. And, I prefer to have historic buildings preserved rather than demolished.
However, the current plan makes the old castle look out of place and quite lonesome. What kind of appearance or impression of our high school campus do we want to project to potential newcomers? And, how will the castle be used if it is preserved?
I would encourage others to look at the current Urbana High School plan to make sure it is right for future generations of UHS grads and our community.
