The Champaign County Board of Elections appointed its deputy director to the director’s seat Wednesday.

The board appointed Meredith Bodey as director and moved former director Kathy Meyer to the deputy director post. The change was effective Wednesday.

Meyer is leaving Champaign County to become the Allen County Board of Elections director at the end of the month.

“I’m nervous. I don’t want to let everybody down,” Bodey said after the board meeting. “But I’m excited. It’s something that I hadn’t planned on.”

The board met in a special meeting Wednesday to consider applications submitted for the director’s position and selected several candidates to interview for deputy director after the March 15 presidential primary, Meyer said.

The board also switched its board president to Lynn Mintchell. According to state law, the director and board chairman must be of opposite parties. Bodey is a Republican. The rule also applies to deputy director and director. Meyer is a Democrat.

Bodey will make just over $40,000 annually, the same salary Meyer received in the director role.

Bodey has been deputy director for four years and has been at the board of elections for 10 years.

The next board of elections meeting is March 15.
