Camp Phoenix helps kids experiencing grief due to loss of loved one, divorce, separation

SPRINGFIELD – Community Mercy Hospice offers a unique opportunity to meet the needs of area children who are experiencing grief due to various situations: the loss of a loved one … a divorce or separation in the family … or other causes. Camp Phoenix, which is celebrating its 11th anniversary, is a free one-day camp on Friday, June 3, at Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The camp provides support in a fun, safe environment that combines recreational activities with support groups. By interacting with other children who share similar grief experiences, children recognize they are not alone in the grieving process and learn valuable skills on how to cope with their loss. Includes snacks, lunch and a camp t-shirt.

Camp Phoenix looks like a typical kid’s summer camp – with a few gentle differences. Children going through loss still have needs for games, arts and crafts, and simple play time. But they also have needs for extra support. Camp Phoenix includes unique activities, such as a Circle of Friends support group, that help children trust that things will get better. The camp is free for any child (age 5-16) who has experienced a loss. Each participant will receive snacks, lunch and camp t-shirt.
