NECCFD to seek replacement levy Nov. 3

NORTH LEWISBURG – The Northeast Champaign County Fire District Board agreed Monday to place a three-year, 4.5-mill replacement levy for fire protection and ambulance service on the November ballot.

During last month’s board meeting, Fiscal Officer Jennifer Jenkins informed members a 4.5-mill replacement levy would generate a gross amount of $429,000 a year, while a renewal levy would generate a gross amount of $365,000.

After discussing the matter in June, the board decided to take a month to research whether or not to present the levy to voters as a replacement and thus keep the same millage as previously approved by 63 percent of district voters back in November 2012 but apply the current property values, or seek a renewal in which the existing tax is continued at the current rate since there would be no changes to the millage or property valuations used back in 2012.

“I’d say replace it because I sure don’t like to go after additional millage,” board member (Wayne Township) Doug Doty said.

Fellow Board member (North Lewisburg) Andy Yoder agreed that a replacement levy was the way to go in his opinion.

“Any increase in revenue would be welcomed,” he said.

A motion placing the replacement levy on the ballot was approved by a 4-0 vote.

Also during the meeting, the board passed a motion to pre-buy propane for the 2015-2016 heating season at a rate of 99 cents per gallon from the R.W. Earhart Company in Troy.
