UUMC plans worship service at Gloria

The Urbana United Methodist Church invites veterans, active military members and their families to attend a Memorial Day weekend worship service, 10 a.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Gloria Theatre, 216 S. Main St., Urbana.

The church will donate $5, for each veteran and active military member who attends the worship service, to the Fisher House, which provides free lodging to military and veteran families while their loved ones are patients at Wright-Patterson Medical Center.

The service will feature guest speaker Dan Cox, a 1993 Urbana High School graduate who served in leadership roles in the field artillery branch of the U.S. Army after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Cox, a two-time captain of the Urbana High School football team, played football all four years at West Point, never losing to Navy.

Cox graduated with a bachelor of science degree in systems engineering and a commission as 2nd lieutenant in the Army. He served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Fort Hood, Texas; and Fort Stewart, Georgia; as well as Iraq, Egypt and Jordan, where he managed programs for the U.S. departments of State and Defense.

Following his Army service, Cox worked in logistics management in the Columbus area before opening his own insurance adjusting business in 2011. He recently moved back to the Urbana area with his wife, Allison, their 2-year-old son, and his 17-year-old stepdaughter and 13-year-old stepson. Cox volunteers as an Urbana Junior High School football coach.

The Urbana VFW/DAV will provide a color guard for the Memorial Day service. Music will be provided by the UUMC Praise Team and a vocal ensemble that will perform “God Bless America.”
