SPRINGFIELD – An Urbana resident was charged with theft in Clark County last week for allegedly stealing money from a residence she was cleaning.

Brittany G. McLaughlin, 26, of 1060 S. High St., was charged with a fifth degree felony theft charge in connection to alleged conduct from Feb. 4.

According to a press release, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office took a theft complaint on Jan. 28 from a resident in the 500 block of Shrine Road.

It was reported that the homeowners found on several occasions that money had come up missing after their cleaning crew left the residence. The residents stated they hired Busy Bee Cleaning to come in once a week and clean the house and over the past few visits they noticed things were missing.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office were assigned to look into the case.

On the morning of Feb. 4, investigators placed a controlled amount of marked bills in the residence, knowing that the cleaning crew was going to be there that day. Once the cleaning crew left the residence, investigators checked and found that a large amount of the money had been taken.

The cleaning crew was stopped on Upper Valley Pike at Ironwood Drive and McLaughlin was identified as the responsible party. She admitted to taking the money, removed it from her boot and returned it.

McLaughlin was transported to the sheriff’s office where she was interviewed and charged with one count of theft.

A probable cause affidavit filed in the Clark County Municipal Court states McLaughlin admitted to theft totaling $1,650 collectively. An arraignment hearing in the case was scheduled for Friday morning.
