Urbana Police have arrested 23-year-old Walter Eugene Ray, who is suspected in the shooting of an Urbana resident late Sunday afternoon. Police were dispatched to 620 South Walnut Street at 4:18 p.m. on the report of a man being shot inside the residence there.

Upon officers’ arrival at the scene, they found 27-year-old Jimmie Huffman of that address inside the home, injured from gunshot wounds. Also in the home at the time of the shooting were Huffman’s girlfriend and a 1-year-old baby, both of whom were uninjured in the shooting. Urbana Fire Division medics provided care to the shooting victim, who was first transported by Medic Unit to the CareFlight hangar in Urbana, which then airlifted Huffman to Dayton’s Miami Valley Hospital, where he is being treated.

Police interviewed the victim at the scene of the shooting and again at Miami Valley Hospital and have gathered evidentiary items from the scene as part of their investigation.

Ray was taken by a family member to Springfield Regional Hospital later Sunday afternoon, to be treated for injuries involved in an altercation at the Urbana home.

Urbana police were notified and responded to Springfield Regional Hospital where they interviewed Ray, initially, and then took him into custody for his involvement in the shooting.

Police also interviewed another adult who had been with Ray when the shooting occurred who had also fled with him in a 2003 Silver/Black Hyundai SUV, prior to officers arriving on the Urbana scene.

Police have recovered the weapon they believe was used in the shooting from a location in Springfield.

Once Ray is processed at the Urbana Police Division, he will be taken to the Tri-County Jail on multiple felony criminal charges associated with the shooting.
