City pool preparing for summer

Champaign Family YMCA staffers already have jumped into the deep end in their new roles helping to manage the Urbana City Pool.

YMCA staffers, including Charles Williams and Bob Pullins, began cleaning the seasonal outdoor pool last month. The pool facility itself still belongs to the city, but for 2017 the Y and the city reached an agreement to have the local Y manage pool operations.

According to Greg Hower, who is membership, marketing and youth sports director of the YMCA, “Y staff have been in the process and hope to finish power-washing, scraping and grinding, caulking, and painting the entire pool floor this week. Working with the city, we have repaired plumbing throughout the facility, and plans are in place to paint light fixtures, re-surface the bathroom floors, and replace the fence around the kiddie pool area.”

Individuals who wish to purchase single or family season passes to the pool can visit the Champaign Family YMCA, 191 Community Drive, 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays; 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays; or 1-4 p.m. Sundays.

Located at 689 Park Ave. in Melvin Miller Park, the city pool opens for the summer on Saturday, May 27. The pool closes Aug. 19, according to information on the YMCA website.

Daily pool hours are noon to 7 p.m., weather permitting.
