WL-S district seeks renewal levy

WEST LIBERTY – West Liberty-Salem Local Schools will have a renewal levy on the March presidential primary ballot.

The district’s 1 percent, three-year income tax levy renewal generates an estimated $1.3 million annually for the district. It was first approved by voters in 1992, Superintendent Kraig Hissong said. This levy is different from the building project levy voters approved previously.

“It has been approved every three years since,” Hissong told the school board at its Tuesday meeting. “It has been well supported by the community.”

The income tax levy provides funding for operations, which range from staffing to programming, books and materials. It can be used for other items as necessary for school operations, but is generally not used for permanent improvements, Hissong said.

“It is an essential revenue source for the school district,” he said.

The primary election date is March 15.
