When it comes to making a good bowl of chili – hot or mild – Urbana Health & Rehab Center (formerly Heartland of Urbana) employee Tasha Mays has it covered.

During Thursday’s annual Urbana Health & Rehab Center’s Chili Cook-Off, nearly two dozen local politicians, business leaders, and community servants gathered to judge either eight mild chili recipes prepared by the center’s staff or eight hot/spicy varieties. Once the scores were tabulated, Mays, and Urbana resident who handles the center’s medical records, was awarded the “Golden Ladle” award in both categories.

The public will get its chance to taste Mays’ winning recipes during the center’s annual Chili Supper to be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 23 at 741 E. Water St., Urbana.

“It’s quite a big event here, and we help raise money for a great cause,” said Debby Goddard, admissions and marketing director for Urbana Health & Rehab.

Tickets to the supper, which will be followed by a dessert auction, are $5 per person or $2 for children 12 years of age and under. In order to make sure enough chili is prepared for the event, those planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP by March 20 by calling Goddard or Mays at 937-652-1381.

Urbana Health & Rehab Center Administrator Dawn McCall said in coordination with the center’s opening of a new dementia unit, 100 percent of the proceeds from the chili supper and dessert auction will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
