Weapons, drug possession case bound over

The case of a man arrested on felony weapons and drug possession charges was bound over to the Champaign County Common Pleas Court Monday.

Benjamin L. Cartwright, 39, of 7650 Calland Road, West Liberty, was charged with having weapons while under disability, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, carrying concealed weapons, possession of cocaine, aggravated possession of drugs, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and driving under suspension.

According to the Champaign County Municipal Court’s website, Cartwright’s case was bound over during a hearing on Monday. The court ordered Cartwright to live at a West Liberty residence.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell stated that on Feb. 8 area law enforcement were attempting to locate Cartwright to check on his well-being after it had been reported he was upset, may be armed with a handgun and was driving with a suspended license. Police were also aware of a warrant out of the Clark County Common Pleas Court for a failure to appear charge.

Police spotted and stopped a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier Cartwright was driving in the 200 block of Miami Street. While taking him into custody, police recovered illegal drugs, including suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription medications, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and cash.

Lingrell stated police recovered a .32 caliber handgun loaded with a full metal jacket round under the driver’s seat of the vehicle as well as additional drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Police learned Cartwright faces charges out of the Logan County Common Pleas Court.

According to the Logan County Clerk of Court’s website, Cartwright was indicted last November for possession of a controlled substance analog, carrying a concealed weapon with a specification, possession of LSD and illegal conveyance of drugs onto grounds of a detention facility.

The website also states a motion to revoke bond was filed on Feb. 10 and a capias warrant was issued for Cartwright’s arrest on Tuesday.
