4 Urbana City Council seats up for election

All four Republicans whose terms expire on the Urbana City Council at year’s end have obtained petitions from the Champaign County Board of Elections for a try at another four years, according to Board Director Meredith Bodey, who added only Gene Fields, Ward 1, has filed his petition so far. The other incumbents are Dwight Paul, 3rd Ward rep, and at-large reps Tony Pena and Doug Hoffman.

Bodey said those four council positions are the only local ones that will appear on May 2 primary ballots. She added that a council election will not be held if only one person files for each position.

The filing deadline for candidates and for issues is 4 p.m. Feb. 1. The deadline for people registering to vote in the primary is April 3.

Bodey said the only issues filed so far are for the Miami Valley Career Technology Vocational School District in Montgomery County, which is seeking 0.8-mill and 0.29-mill for a bond issue and a 0.34-mill property tax. Voters for these issues include 12 in Champaign County’s Jackson East precinct. They are part of the Miami East school district.

The county Board of Elections is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Feb. 9 to certify filings for the May 2 primary. The general election will be held Nov. 7.
