On Sunday, Jan. 22, from 2 to 3 p.m., Champaign County Right to Life held its annual Witness for Life on Monument Square to mark the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision to legalize abortion. The last available figure for deaths from abortion in Ohio is 20,976 (2015), the equal of the population of Sidney. Attending the Witness were 105 people from 12 local churches, with Pastors Larry Gearhart and Matthew Lee (St. Mary’s), Jim Chess (Urbana Friends Church) and Brian Wonn (First Baptist, Urbana). Ten of the participants were members of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1727, Urbana. The Witness is always peaceful and prayerful, Those unable to stand outside were invited for prayer at St. Mary’s for the hour.
Champaign County Right to Life supports life from conception to natural death. Since Champaign County lost 38 unborn babies to abortion in 2015, CCRTL seeks to educate people on the non-necessity of taking such a drastic step, and encourages those women who are contemplating abortion to get in touch with CCRTL (653-6745 or e-mail [email protected]). CCRTL can help in two ways, with immediate support and with referral for counseling. It refers expectant and new mothers to Sycamore House, located at 315 Sycamore St., Urbana (653-3737). CCRTL also tries to educate the educational and business sectors of Champaign County on the loss of future citizens who would be members of school classes, buyers of local merchandise, and workers that the county needs. Churches interested in pro-life literature and CDs for classes can borrow these items at no cost.
The local abortion rate has declined sharply over the past 20 years, from 75 a year to around 34. However, the national abortion total since 1973 has topped 58 million, which is 138,095 a year. This figure is unsustainable for a nation’s survival in the long run. Abortion is now a commercial and profitable business, though heavily supported by taxpayers’ dollars.
