Robbery reported in North Lewisburg

NORTH LEWISBURG – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an armed robbery at a village business Wednesday evening.

According to Sheriff Matt Melvin, at 6:09 p.m., deputies responded to the Sycamore Market, 50 N. Sycamore St. in the village.

The caller advised a man entered the building through the front door, approached the counter brandishing a firearm and ordered the caller to give him all the money.

As the caller was attempting to open the register, a vehicle approached the business’s drive-thru area, the caller reported. Melvin stated the sheriff’s office believes this startled the suspect, who fled out the front door.

The suspect was reported last seen traveling northbound on foot from the market and wearing jeans and a gray hoodie and carrying a backpack.

Deputies searched the area but didn’t locate the suspect.

Melvin stated deputies have not ruled out this suspect may have been involved in the recent vehicle break-ins in the village, during which a firearm was stolen along with several other items, such as medication, money, gift cards and checkbooks.

A Jan. 6 post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page states these offenses occurred during nighttime hours, with at least one report of items stolen while residents slept.

The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information regarding Wednesday’s robbery to call Champaign County Sheriff Detectives at 937-484-6091.
