WL-S school board approves staff actions

WEST LIBERTY – The West Liberty-Salem Local Schools board approved staff hires at its Tuesday meeting.

The board approved hiring Maintenance, Custodial and Building Operations Supervisor Dan Shover at Step 8, beginning no later than Jan. 3, 2017, through July 31, 2019. Shover will be on a 260-day contract at a $54,359.89 salary.

The board hired Nancy Ruth Pennington to fill the vacant assistant to the treasurer position beginning Jan. 9, 2017. Her first year of the contract will be for 146 days, and the second year of her contract will be for 260 days, at a $144.40 daily rate.

The board approved hiring Middle School Wrestling Coach Ben Griffith at Step 3 for the 2016-17 school year.

The board approved the purchase of a 2004 BlueBird 72-passenger conventional bus from Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools for $4,500 to replace a substitute bus whose engine failed.

In other action, the board:

•Approved the overnight wrestling trip Dec. 29-30 for the high school wrestling team to participate in the Toledo St. Johns Wrestling Invitational.

•Accepted the resignation of bus driver Shelby Sellars, effective Jan. 6, 2017. Sellars will remain as a substitute bus driver and an educational paraprofessional (aide) for the rest of the 2016-17 school year.

•Accepted a $200 donation from Spriggs Wing Post 5451 for Guidance; a $100 donation from Nancy G. and Christopher Schultz for a Softball Cage Net; and $10,000 from the Georgine E. Bates Memorial Fund for Athletics.

•Approved the annual Ohio School Boards Association membership for calendar year 2017 at a cost of $4,304.

•Approved a $2,500 Community Health and Wellness Grant from Mary Rutan Foundation to the Key Club for the WL-S middle school/high school Drug Free Initiative Program.
