Mill Street property sold in the village

NORTH LEWISBURG – The village council was informed about the sale of property located at 395 Mill St. for $64,000 during the regular meeting Tuesday.

The village acquired the 5.4-acre lot in front of the village’s water treatment plant last February for $100,000. Council agreed to sell part of the land to recoup the costs of acquiring the property during the Aug. 4, 2015, meeting.

Village Administrator Andy Yoder said the funds from the sale will be placed in the water fund to offset the loan amount used to purchase the property. He added the remaining acreage left will be used for a buffer or isolation area around the wells that supply drinking water for the village.

The village is expected to close on the property on Jan. 12.

Data security breach discussed

Mayor Cheryl Hollingsworth informed council of a memo the village received from the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA) about a potential data security incident.

The memo from Dec. 31, 2015, states while preparing to destroy DVDs used as part of the agency’s previous backup system in early November, it was discovered that one DVD case was empty and the disc was missing. The agency stated they were unable to find the DVD which might have contained backup copies of income tax documents submitted on or before June 2012.

The agency stated 50,000 individuals, representing less than 2 percent of tax accounts handled by RITA, would receive this memo. RITA collects and administers the village’s local one percent income tax.

Residents with concerns were asked to call 866-940-3613 for more information on the security incident or visit RITA’s website at ritaohio.com.

Separate from the security incident, Yoder noted Urbana Law Director Breanne Parcels is holding a data privacy workshop at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Urbana Municipal Building, 205 S. Main St.

In other action:

•The sheriff’s office’s monthly activity report for the village states five arrests and one traffic stop were made in December. Hollingsworth stated Yoder contacted the sheriff’s office seeking a quote for additional sheriff’s services as deputies are often busy attending court and working on follow up investigations.

•Hollingsworth provided council with a list of board and committee assignments for 2016. She said some of the boards have been shuffled around to give people a new opportunity and asked council to arrange meetings for this month to establish goals and meet on a quarterly basis.

•Meeting minutes, financial and department reports to council will be via email prior to future meetings.
