LOGAN COUNTY – A 16-year-old boy was shot to death and a 20-year-old man is in jail following a melee at an underage drinking party in the northwestern Logan County township of Bloomfield early Sunday morning.

Branden Doseck, 16, of Jackson Center, was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine early Sunday morning. The alleged shooter, Evan J. Hoffman, 20, 6089 County Road 21, is currently in the Logan County Jail being held on a number of misdemeanor charges – mostly stemming from his alleged furnishing of alcohol to underage persons. As of Sunday, Hoffman was being held on a $13,000 bond.

An audio file released Monday details Hoffman’s call to Logan County’s 9-1-1 center (see related story).

According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, at 3:35 a.m. Sunday deputies were dispatched to Hoffman’s house at 6089 County Road 21, which is located north of the village of DeGraff and near the unincorporated village of Bloom Center. Reports indicated that there was an underage drinking party at the residence which devolved into a fight, after which Doseck left, then returned about a hour later with a family member and several other individuals.

Deputies report another brawl commenced at the front door when Doseck and his friends returned to the party. Once the second fight ensued on the front porch, deputies say that Doseck forced his way into the home through a side entrance. According to the report, once he gained entrance in the house, Doseck confronted Hoffman and the two fought, at which time Hoffman reportedly shot Doseck. Hoffman then allegedly fired his weapon into the crowd of people on his front porch, causing two other people minor injuries, both of whom refused treatment.

Doseck was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital by the Indian Lake EMS, where he was pronounced dead by the medical staff.

Deputies arrested Hoffman and charged him with seven counts of furnishing alcohol to underage persons, seven counts of permitting underage consumption of alcohol and six counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, all of which are misdemeanors.

Charges regarding the homicide had not been filed as of press time because of the possibility of self-defense, but the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office received the case Monday morning and may present additional charges against Hoffman to a Logan County grand jury.

Hoffman remained in the Logan County Jail as of Monday afternoon.
