An man was arrested in the Urbana Municipal Building after a tussle with law enforcement Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release from Urbana Police Lt. Seth King, Anthony C. Hammond, 55, of 403 Miami St., Urbana, is charged with felony charges of assaulting a court probation officer, obstructing official business and a misdemeanor assaulting the court bailiff charge following the incident.

At around 2:40 p.m., Hammond barged into the Champaign County Municipal Court at the end of another hearing, causing a disturbance over an unrelated matter regarding a personal dispute he had with the Urbana Police Division and the municipal court.

Hammond was ordered out of the courtroom and told he was in contempt of court. Hammond argued with Judge Gil Weithman who ordered the man to be arrested by the court bailiff and an Urbana Police officer who was present for the hearing.

The officer and bailiff struggled to arrest Hammond and the altercation ended up in the lobby of the municipal building, where they were assisted in arresting Hammond by a municipal court probation officer and additional Urbana Police officers.

Hammond was secured and transported to the Tri-County Regional Jail for the contempt of court charge.
