Crash kills two on South US Route 68

Two people were killed in a single vehicle crash in the area of South U.S. Highway 68 early Tuesday morning.

According to information from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Serra L. (Mitchell) Skaggs, 29, of Springfield, and Phillip E. Skaggs Jr., 41, of Springfield, were both killed in the crash.

At 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, the Champaign Countywide Communication Center received a 911 call in reference to a possible single vehicle rollover crash occurring on South U.S. Highway 68 just north of Deer Run Road.

Urbana Fire and EMS along with sheriff deputies responded to the location.

At the scene a green 1999 Pontiac Sunfire was upside down on its roof located on the roadway at Warrior Place. A male occupant, who was identified as Skaggs, had been ejected from the vehicle and was transported to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, via CareFlight.

Serra Skaggs was found inside the vehicle.

An initial investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 68 when it crossed over into the northbound lane. The vehicle traveled off the east roadway edge going up a steep embankment rolling over several times.

Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin said Serra Skaggs was identified as the driver and was pronounced dead at the scene by Champaign County Coroner Dr. Josh Richards. Skaggs was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials stated it appeared that both occupants were not wearing seat belts.

The Multi County Crash Investigation Team consisting of deputies from Champaign, Union, Hardin and Logan Counties responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
