A Champaign County grand jury on Thursday indicted a man accused of killing a 4-year-old child.

In a press release from the Champaign County Prosecutor’s Office, Prosecutor Kevin Talebi states Michael C.R. Stapleton was indicted on nine charges including three counts of murder in addition to charges of felonious assault, endangering children, involuntary manslaughter and possessing criminal tools in connection to the Nov. 29 death of Brett Jaynes II.

Talebi states the victim was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus on that date. The child was a resident of the county and the circumstances of his death have been under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and case workers from the Champaign County Department of Job and Family Services.

Talebi noted the county prosecutor’s office presented testimony and evidence collected by these entities to a grand jury Thursday.

Stapleton is scheduled to be arraigned in the Champaign County Common Pleas Court, 200 N. Main St., on Friday morning.

The release states each murder charges holds an indefinite term of 15 years to life in prison if Stapleton is convicted.
