WEST LIBERTY – West Liberty-Salem Local Schools calendar will change a couple of days in November to accommodate the building project.
The school board approved a calendar change Tuesday to switch move-in dates for Phase 4 for staff from Nov. 3-4 to Nov. 21-22. The switch was needed to give more time to complete the phase.
The change means Nov. 3-4 will be regular school days, and Nov. 21-22 will become “professional development” days for teachers and staff. This change extends Thanksgiving break for students by two days, meaning they will not attend school the week of Nov. 21.
The building project adds classroom space, a second driveway and renovations to the entire building. It has impacted the school calendar the last couple of years. Construction crews sought to do the bulk of the work during the summer. Administrators shortened the school year, but added time to school days.
There are two phases left to complete – elementary wings for the fourth and fifth grades, and the second and third grades. One phase is estimated to end in November, and the other in April, Superintendent Kraig Hissong said previously.
In other action, the board:
•Approved Jenny Downing for part-time paraprofessional work at Step 8 for the 2016-17 school year.
•Approved Jessica Neiman as substitute secretary for the 2016-17 school year.
•Approved overnight trips for the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, Oct. 19-22; the FFA Lock-in at West Liberty-Salem Nov. 22-23; the Senior New York City trip, April 18-22, 2017; the state FFA Convention trip to Columbus, May 4-5, 2017; the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip, May 17-19, 2017; the seventh grade Chicago trip, May 24-26, 2017; and the sixth grade Camp Wilson trip, May 25-26, 2017.
•Approved donations of $100 from Jim and Jill Hoffman for Girls Soccer; $300 from Safety-Wear/Mike King for over 100 pairs of safety glasses; and $1,500 each (second payment) from Marie’s Candies, Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, and Green Hills Community for the new score keepers table.
