Local man charged with OVI after injury crash

MECHANICSBURG – A two-vehicle injury crash in Goshen Township caused two people to be transported to area hospitals on Tuesday.

The crash occurred at 8:17 p.m. in the 9000 block of state Route 4 in Goshen Township, according to a press release from Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin.

John O’Laughlin, 71, of Mechanicsburg, while driving northbound on state Route 4 in a 1999 Chevy Trailblazer, went left of the center line in the roadway and struck John Zugelder, 70, of Springfield. Zugelder was driving a 2005 Chevy Silverado.

Zugelder was transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. O’Laughlin was taken by Urbana EMS to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana.

O’Laughlin was later charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, Melvin said in the press release.

Mechanicsburg Fire/EMS and Urbana EMS responded to the scene, along with CareFlight.

The accident remains under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
