Mrs. Claus to join Santa for Christmas in the Village

MECHANICSBURG – Our Towne Mechanicsburg helped kick off the village’s annual Christmas festivities on Nov. 25 with the lighting of the Christmas tree at the corner of Main and Sandusky streets. The village’s biggest holiday event – the annual Christmas in the Village – will invade the downtown area on Dec. 12.

Our Towne Mechanicsburg Chairman Dan Eck said this year’s Christmas tree, which was donated by Elaine Riley, is the biggest tree to date, and it’s adorned with decorations made by students at Dohron Wilson Elementary.

This year’s Christmas in the Village, which kicks off at 9 a.m. on Dec. 12, will feature a familiar lineup consisting of an arts and crafts show featuring a basket raffle, wagon rides, pet portraits at Champion Feed & Pet, cow patty bingo, food and drinks, music from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church, 43 E. Sandusky St., and a parade beginning at 2 p.m.

Following the parade, Santa Claus will be visiting with children at the church.

Unlike past Christmas in the Village events, Mrs. Claus will be accompanying Santa in the parade, and afterwards, she will be on hand at the gazebo located next to the municipal building at 18 N. Main St.

Eck said Mrs. Claus will be collecting holiday cards and letters that will be sent to active and deployed military personnel and to veterans currently hospitalized in veterans affairs hospitals.

In other efforts to support active military during the holidays, the local Girl Scouts troop will be accepting supplies for care packages. Items needed include toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, baggies of all sizes, razors, antibacterial wipes, small spiral pocket memo pads, pens, stationery, individually-wrapped snack food items … etc.

Making homes out of a Christmas favorite

For those individuals interested in competing in the annual contest to see who can make the best gingerbread house, applications are available at the Mechanicsburg Public Library.

The rules for the contest are the house must be made of at least 90 percent edible content, must fit on a 10-by-14 base, and it can’t be made using a gingerbread house kit. All entries will be put on display throughout the village during the Christmas in the Village event.

Anyone interested in participating in this year’s parade can contact Eck at 614-579-2120 (call or text) or [email protected].

Those individuals interested in participating in the arts and crafts show or volunteering their time during Christmas in the Village are asked to call 614-584-2467 or 937-631-0228.
