Man charged with murder in boy’s death

NORTH LEWISBURG – A 25-year-old North Lewisburg man was arrested by Champaign County sheriff’s deputies and charged with murder and felonious assault Tuesday evening.

Michael C.R. Stapleton’s arrest at 5:27 p.m. on Tuesday stems from the death of a 4-year-old boy named Brett Jaynes in North Lewisburg on Sunday.

“This arrest is a result of an ongoing investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Champaign County Prosecutor’s Office and State of Ohio BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation),” according to a statement released Tuesday at 7 p.m. by the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded to 254 Gunn St. in North Lewisburg on Sunday at 1:34 p.m. after a caller reported an unresponsive 4-year-old male.

The Northeast Champaign County Fire District responded to the scene and transported the boy to Memorial Hospital of Union County before he was flown to Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

The boy was pronounced dead at 7:01 p.m. in Columbus, where the body was turned over to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
