Hearing to be held in child endangering case

An Urbana resident is scheduled to appear in court again Monday after her 2-year-old child wandered outside alone.

Heather Bailey, 33, of 151 Westview Drive, is charged with child endangering, a first degree misdemeanor. A pretrial hearing in the case is scheduled for Monday.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said that on Oct. 7 at 4:41 p.m. police investigated a child endangering case involving a 2-year-old child found wandering around the area of Westview Drive and North Main Street in her bare feet.

Lingrell stated the child was observed by a nearby resident who thought she was getting ready to possibly cross the street. The resident went to the child and notified police.

Lingrell said the child seemed healthy and appropriately dressed except for being barefoot.

Another nearby resident told police she believed the child lived somewhere on Westview Drive. Police notified Children’s Services to assist them at the scene as they continued to try to find the child’s home and parent.

An officer walking the neighborhood discovered a door standing partially open at Bailey’s residence and upon making contact with her learned the child wandered away while she was doing laundry in another part of the home.

During an arraignment hearing on Tuesday, Bailey was ordered to comply with all conditions set forth by Children’s Services as a condition of bond.
