Family member backs up over 23-month-old boy, killing him

TROY, Ohio (AP) — Police in Ohio say a 23-month-old boy has died after a family member backed up over him in a pickup truck over the weekend.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Marcus Bowers died at the scene on Sunday in Brown Township near Fletcher. The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. when Bowers reportedly ran into the path of the truck as it was backing out of a driveway.

Chief Deputy Dave Duchak says the preliminary investigation indicates that the family member did not see the boy. The sheriff’s office did not disclose the identity of the driver or his relation to Bowers.

Duchak called the accident a “terrible, terrible tragedy.”

Police: Cop kills suspect holding pharmacist at knifepoint

HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — A police chief says an officer fatally shot a suspect who was holding a knife to a pharmacist’s throat in a southwest Ohio drugstore.

Hamilton Police Chief Craig Bucheit says officers responded about 2:30 a.m. Monday to a 911 call about someone jumping over a counter in the pharmacy area of a Walgreens store.

Bucheit says two officers arrived to find a suspect holding the pharmacist “hostage with a knife at her throat.” The chief says the suspect didn’t comply with police commands and was fatally shot by one of the officers after a brief confrontation. Bucheit says the pharmacist was “shook up,” but not injured.

Bucheit says the suspect wasn’t immediately identified but was believed to be a black male in his 20s. The investigation was continuing.

Ohio gas prices climb slightly to start another workweek

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Gas prices in Ohio have climbed slightly with the start of another workweek.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Ohio was around $2.17 in Monday’s survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc. That’s up 8 cents from a week ago and 7 cents above the average a month ago. The average price in Ohio this time last year was $2.72.

The national average price on Monday was $2.16, up four cents from a week ago, but down two cents from the same time last month. The average price across the nation this time last year was $2.62.

Pump prices are likely to remain cheap through the rest of the summer, with gasoline supplies high and oil prices still relatively low.

Veteran skydiver killed during jump in southwest Ohio

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — The owner of a skydiving company says a man has died after opening his main and reserve parachutes too late during a jump at a southwest Ohio airport.

The Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News reports the 47-year-old man from the Cincinnati suburb of Mason man plunged to his death Sunday morning at Middletown Regional Airport.

Drop Zone owner John Hart II says the man had made 95 previous jumps. Hart says the man deployed his main parachute under the recommended altitude limit of 3,500 feet and opened his reserve parachute too late as well. Authorities haven’t released the man’s name.

The newspaper reports that the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
