The 50th Mid-Eastern Regional Fly-In (MERFI) Wings & Wheels event scheduled to take place this weekend at Grimes Field in Urbana was called off, MERFI President Eddie Noble confirmed late Monday.

“MERFI has been cancelled for 2016, and restructuring has been in the works for 2017 to make MERFI bigger and better for a larger audience,” Noble said.

The event, which has called Grimes Field home since 2008 and was scheduled to be held Saturday and Sunday, is one of the nation’s oldest regional fly-ins.

As for making sure MERFI gets off the ground in 2017 for its 50th installment, Noble said, “We are reaching out for volunteers as well as sponsors for next year’s event.”
